Giving Tuesday on November 30th

BODYART is working hard to serve our communities and we wanted to take a moment to spotlight our programs and community partners.

Moving to Heal

Moving to Heal has been working hard to serve communities in Los Angeles and New Orleans. This past year M2H was awarded the Impact Projects Grant from the California Arts Council, the Emily Schoeenbaum Grant from the Newcomb Institute, and the Organizational Grant Program award from the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture. Beginning January 2022 we’ll be launching a 10-week program of Moving to Heal classes at Eden House in New Orleans and a 36-week program at 1736 Family Crisis Center. Support for M2H goes toward launching more classes at more women’s shelters in Los Angeles and New Orleans.

PLACEHOLDER

Placeholder is a film residency program that collaborates with communities that have undergone economic or natural disasters. The collaborators produce short-form experimental documentaries that blend site-specific dance with investigative filmmaking to process the impact of urban blight on cultural identity. BODYART and the Lower Ninth Ward Center for Sustainable Engagement and Development (CSED) are currently raising funds to launch Placeholder in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans. Placeholder asks: “Does urban blight, specifically vacant lots, impact cultural identity? And if so, can community-led, artistic-driven events encourage cultural stimulation?” The Lower Ninth Ward is currently home to more than 2100 vacant lots (3x more than any other neighborhood in New Orleans). Placeholder proposes a community-led activation event on a vacant lot to research its impact on cultural identity before and after.

Let me introduce you to...

He is also the chief spokesperson for the CSED, taking the lead role to further shaping unified principles focused around cultural sensitivity, urban and coastal planning, and sustainable strategies for the Lower Ninth Ward. This past summer we worked with Service Learning students from Tulane University to help with engagement, marketing, and development strategies for our engagement programs. Service-Learning student Kiland Harrison conducted a lovely interview with Arthur (see above) and we encourage you to watch it!

Giving Tuesday is November 30th!

When you donate to BODYART you help us bring valuable programming to women’s shelters, survivors of domestic and sexual violence, and at-risk communities across Los Angeles and New Orleans. Thank you for your kind words and support over this past year. We appreciate you and we look forward to bringing you more updates on the ways we’re serving our communities.
