'hymn+them' South American Tour
¡Nos Vamos a Chile!
BODYART is thrilled to be launching our first South American tour this April 2021 in Chile. With producer Milca Galea, in partnership with Corredor de Danza Valparaiso, BODYART will be presenting hymn + them across multiple venues in Valparaíso as well as collaborating with Chilean dance companies to create site-specific work inspired by the region’s public spaces.
Our Commitment to Cultural Pluralism.
BODYART is a highly collaborative organization. We believe different perspectives, aesthetics, and values not only make for good art, but good artists. Our mission has always been to increase accessibility in the arts, especially contemporary dance. We are constantly looking for ways in which we can do better and further our mission. In 2018 we began strategizing ways to increase our efforts in diversity, equity, and inclusion within our artmaking practice, our touring goals, and our engagement programs. (We have a lot of amazing things in the works, and we can’t wait to share them with you!) We desire to learn more about contemporary dance within LatinX culture, and we are beginning with a cultural exchange tour in Chile with Corredor de Danza Valparaíso.
Corredor de Danza Valparaíso
In 2018 we reached out to artist extraordinaire Milca Galea to learn more about contemporary dance culture in Chile. Milca introduced us to her organization, Corredor de Danza, and her equally talented colleagues Daniela Álvarez and Keny Huerta Pastén. Corredor de Danza shares a similar mission: decentralize the arts and bring contemporary dance to more rural communities throughout Chile. We couldn’t be more excited to learn and create with these amazing women. The cultural exchange will continue in 2022 when BODYART hosts and presents Corredor de Danza to the NOLA and Los Angeles communities.
The Tour
The tour will begin with a creative residency in Valparaíso with Corredor de Danza, where we will create a new site-specific work at the Maestranza Barón, a once-thriving (now abandoned) railway workshop turned national monument.
The second week of the tour BODYART will travel to Valdivia to collaborate with Centro de Experimentación Escénica (CEE), another organization that is dedicated to increasing accessibility in the arts and promotes local Valdivia artists. BODYART and CEE will create new site-specific works at some of Valdivia’s public spaces.
We will end the tour with a split-bill presentation of BODYART’s hymn + them and selected works from Corredor de Danza at four venues across the Valparaíso region. In addition to public presentations, BODYART will also offer a couple of Moving to Heal workshops open to the Valparaíso community. We look forward to learning more about our Chilean collaborators and audiences. Stay tuned to hear about the sites we visit and the work we create!
